Celebrity Makeup Artist Intern for Denise Tunnell: "Lessons Learned"

I assisted celebrity Makeup Artist, Denise Tunnell on the film, The Marriage Chronicles, in Los Angeles last month and I was able to walk away with many valuable lessons that I'd like to share:

1. Understand the industry in which you work. This is the film industry. Be familiar with the character's names, actors, script, and jargon. How makeup is done for film is not the same as a fashion show , etc. Open your mind to understand the "why."

2. Do not self-promote. "If they like how you do their makeup, trust me they know how to get in touch with you."- Denise Tunnell. It's "tacky" to hand out business cards from crew to cast and it's best to be "asked for."

3. Do not engage into conversations amongst the cast. You are there to work and do makeup so get it done. Many times the actors would go from personal conversation into rehearsing and it's best not to disrupt their train of thought also too much chitter chatter on a personal level is not professional and can be viewed as "trying to get in" with the actors. Cordial is just fine.

4. Always make sure you eat before you start. Don't allow yourself to be rushed into starting because someone arrives earlier as if you get started you will be on a roll. Cast as well as crew have a vital impact on the production.

5. Take photos for continuity. For some projects it's good to have a camera and printer or Polaroid to capture each look you do as they pertain to any given scene. This is vital just in case a scene is shot over again. I also made note of each product I used on each actor. (Terri Vaughn, Persia White (touch-ups), Caryn Ward, Billy "Sly" Williams, Darrin Henson, and Ayo Sorrells).

6. I learned how to groom a man's beard with a mascara wand and the "Hair Reel" product.

7. I also learned when doing a man's makeup ensure to cover the ears as well and head if he is bald.

8. I used the beauty blender for the first time and loved seeing the difference (much smoother makeup in appearance). It's great for blending and applying concealers, corrects, blush, and even the contour areas.

9. I learned how makeup appears differently on an HD film camera versus non-HD. It seemed as if more "red" was pulled from the actor's faces so I had to adjust accordingly.

10. It is best to have separate makeup bags for each actor with all products needed for touch-ups while on set and an affordable route is zip-lock bags!

11. If you make an error with makeup, it may be best to clean it off and start all over versus trying to correct over what you've done already. Each case will dictate.

12. Find a "happy middle" when the actor wants their makeup differently than what is requested for the scene.

13. I was also happy to try out some products from Denise's makeup line Illusions Beauty.

14. When working as an intern you are more than an assistant. You don't just "help." You walk away with a lot of the "how to" and "why."

When assisting as a makeup artist it is vital to be a good listener with open ears and mind, be on time and attentive, and realize that you are there for anything requested. I did makeup, took out the trash, ran and grabbed food, took pictures, etc. I was eager regardless of the limited rest I had from working 12-15 hour days back to back.
This experience was beyond valuable, so valuable that I think it is something I should have or would have paid for versus being paid!

It's amazing how networking via various social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, to name a few, can lead to promising opportunities. It's even more amazing to know that it requires hard work coupled with talent, faith, preparation, strong will, a relentless drive for success, and dedication to meet the opportunities set forth for you in your life. One cannot simply be eager, but one must be ready as well. One cannot simply be ready, but prepared as well.

I received the awesome opportunity of being selected as 1 of the 3 makeup artist interns to work with Denise Tunnell on the film, The Marriage Chronicles in Los Angeles last month. Now let me tell you step by step how this happened and what it TOOK from my end because nothing is easy. Everything worthwhile has to be worked for.

I'm very active in social media.
I've been following, tweeting, and learning from Jennifer James Beauty
I was invited to join a makeup artist group on Facebook by Jennifer James Beauty
I stay active via these social mediums.
I spend my time honing my craft, making my work available for peer critique, testing different products, and researching different makeup techniques when I'm not doing makeup for photoshoots or events.
As most of you know, I'm also in the Military. I was away for 1-week training with limited internet access, but logged on when the day allowed although we were working 12-15 hour days.
I noticed the post about Denise Tunnell looking for interns and I immediately posted to the thread that I would apply and was very much interested. As I saw many makeup artists comment I knew the competition would be tight, nevertheless I was hungry and wanted my work to at least be reviewed and considered. Notice, many times we as artist may feel that we are not ready and never put ourselves out there. If I never even presented my work for consideration would I have had this opportunity? NO! Being considered is a form of success in itself, but it doesn't stop there.
Because my mission didn't allow much time for personal matters during small breaks to eat I would try to get on the internet to submit my resume and website. Time and time again there was either no signal or I was called back in to work and by the time we were released for the night I was so exhausted touching a phone wasn't on my mind.
I checked my email often and then said you know what? Many people will be emailing plus I need to ensure my email goes through so I sent it THREE times. About 2 days later my email went through.
I got a reply with the dates for the film. I thought to self hmm I can't do all 10 days because I had a course scheduled of which I could not cancel. She stated as long as I could do 3-5 days that was fine.
At this point I thought I was already selected, but needed confirmation. She emailed me she would call later. The signal was so low in where I was staying that I didn't receive her call late one night. It went straight to voicemail and I was so upset. I called back, but my signal was awful. Moving forward, my resume was reviewed and we talked on the phone and I got a text stating to standby for an email with location and my schedule. At this point I nearly fell to the floor.
Although I was already familiar with Denise Tunnell I began to learn more and more about her and her artistry. I mean I'm going to assist right so I need to know as much as possible so I can not only be an intern as far as makeup but personally as well.
As this would be the first film set I would be on as a makeup artist (I've done extra work on a few films) I researched more and more on makeup for film.
I packed up my stuff and was off on a little road trip to L.A. Who you know and the relationship you have with them goes a long way. A friend of mine that I used to act with in Atlanta relocated to L.A. and welcomed me in her home for the days I was down there.
I woke up each morning before call time and put in 2 hours for work on my MacBook. Red Bull became my very best friend.
I arrived on set and felt so grateful yet calm and eager all at the same time. I expressed my deep gratitude and how honored I was to meet her (Denise). Opening her case made the illusion of everything so "real!"
Working as an intern I not only took all direction from Denise, the Key Makeup Artist, but was also given the opportunity of trying some of her makeup products from her kit to include her own makeup line Illusions Beauty, and some of her tools although I had my entire kit.
I took mental and written notes as just about everything spoken was a great lesson learned.
I felt honored to ask if she needed coffee, bring her Starbucks, snacks, etc. I extended not only my makeup artistry, open-mind ready to learn, but also my personal assistance.
Well I worked Day 1- Day 4 on the set and had the pleasure of doing makeup for Terri Vaughn, Caryn Ward, Billy "Sly" Williams, Ayo Sorrells, and touch ups on Persia White, Darrin Henson, and Mel Jackson.

I learned so much from this experience and within these 13-15 hour days that I will share it all with you in an upcoming post. Please stay tuned and understand that it takes you being more than ready, willing, and able, but communicating, being eager, determined, persistent, and CONTINUALLY honing your craft so when you see an opportunity you don't shy away from it. Keep in mind this is the first film I worked on and many artists in my shoes may have felt intimidated by the makeup artist base in Los Angeles and all over the country gaping at this opportunity, but I didn't let it steer me away...and I see it was well worth it.

Many times you may hear, "I only use this brand or that brand" signifying it is the ultimate, only, and best. Does this comment stem from lack of knowledge, ignorance, or preference. Fact is, it can be any or all of the above. Professional makeup artists strive to stay knowledgable and up to date of what products exists within the industry, their pros, cons, etc so to limit self to any particular brand can actually be a hinderance.

When it comes to the various makeup brands across the market, being "loyal" and having a preference is one thing; however, being ignorant and limited is unbecoming of a professional makeup artist. -Renee Hamilton (Ideity)

Your Makeup Kit: Product Quantity vs. Artistry Quality

"Ooh I have the newest glosses from this and that brand. I have over 200 eyeshadows. I have every blush from this or that company."

These are some of the many comments heard within the community of makeup artists. While there is nothing wrong with building and diversifying one's kit, what's the point of having every top of the line product but not knowing how to use it or having tons of products that go old from not being touched?

There is a difference between collecting makeup as a hobby and actually building one's kit continuously as a professional.

Now I lovvvvvve makeup and have plenty plenty, but my point here is to invest into education as well as products. Purchase books, attend training, research, learn from other artists, open self to peer critique, and hone your craft.

MAKE UP FOREVER Flash Color Vibrant Yellow: Behind the Scenes

I invested in the MAKE UP FOREVER Professional 12 Flash Color Case which includes an array of vibrant colors which can interchangeably be used for the eyes, lips, and/or cheeks. I decided to try the Juane/ Yellow 013 (Vibrant Yellow) out first and Trudy of Tru Shots Photography, one of my big sisters, captured my experience testing the product out. We went for a little drive in downtown West Palm Beach, FL and while I worked my magic, she captured images and video. Happy Caribbean Heritage Month- Part II

Here are some more images from the Caribbean shoot in Pacifica, CA.

As you will notice, the models have different brow shapes. Not every brow is alike especially as people's hair grow differently and one shape may compliment a person's face better than the other.

I added a dab of a lighter color in her inner lips to give them a fuller look.

Different factors can stimulate creative ideas and for this shoot, the purple earrings did it for me. I used blush and eyeshadow that was complimentary to the color of the earrings as makeup doesn't have to exactly match your wardrobe or accessories.

I loved the scenery. This mass of rock is known to be over a hundred thousand years old and it just felt super cool to have a modern look coupled with ancient beauty.

Makeup On The Beach: I Love Being Black Apparel & Accessories

This past Saturday I was one of the two makeup artists for the I Love Being Black (apparel and accessories) Black Sand Beach photoshoot in Marin, CA which consisted of 20 modes, 3 photographers, 3 volunteers, 1 jewelry designer, and 1 other makeup artist in addition to myself. I Love Being Black carries accessories, men's and women's clothing, baby and youth, calendars and more.

This is a shot of my view from about a fifth of the way down from the top of the mountain. It was about a 10 minute walk down several countless flights of stairs and steps. I must admit my legs did shake on the last leg of the way down.

It was an all day shoot and it was quite windy and breezy. Actually it was COLD, but as I got to work I felt no temperature, no hunger, and no desire to eat. Well that is the norm for the most part when I'm doing makeup.

It was a new experience for me. Now I grew up in South Florida near the beaches and went out there from time to time, but never have I seen a black sand beach or done makeup on the beach.

I must say despite the cold I enjoyed myself and after a while time flew by.

Quantum Leap- Neither Success, Nor Failure is Final

Steve Jobs started what was not even known as Apple at that time in his living room. That one thought alone speaks volume. I actually took an extended mental pause for a moment...

Everything has a beginning; has a start. When pursuing anything, you must start SOMEWHERE and must not let anyone who does not believe in you or support you to have any more input than their opinion if any input at all.

Many times when an observer of your actions cannot even fathom the idea, create a thought along the lines of yours, or imagine the outcome, doubt then penetrates their mind. This doubt is evident in their words, thoughts, and deeds. It is visible through body language, emotions within their eyes, and mannerisms. Now this is fine for a person to be entitled to whatever reaction they choose; however, while everyone is entitled to their own opinion, that doesn't necessarily warrant it being WELCOMED.

When you know self and have confidence in your plan nothing can deter you.

Our body experiences both success and failure with similar chemical reactions. It is natural for a little anxiety to set it, but that natural anxiety did not get in Steve Jobs' way. It did not get into the way of many entrepreneurs and should not get in your way unless...that is...you doubt self......

There comes a time when we need that "Quantum Leap." Jump higher, reach further, and soar the air! Remember neither success, nor failure is final. Allow the birds to sing, the crickets to chirp, and the people to speak, but never allow your heart to stop beating the drum of your passion.

Benefit Cosmetics Exclusive Party with Molly Ringwald

This Tuesday evening I attended an exclusive party at the Benefit Cosmetics location in San Francisco.

It was an evening event where makeup artists, beauty bloggers, fans, and every day women and men gathered for a reading of Molly Ringwald's new book, "Getting The Pretty Back- Friendship, Family, and Finding the Perfect Lipstick." This book is about her very own take on love, life, and beauty.

Excerpt from book, "This book is about celebrating turning forty and being the sexiest, funniest, smartest, best-dressed, and most confident woman that you can be."

I just got started on reading this book and I must say in appearance alone it is quite animated and pulls you in and just from her reading I suggest this book for not only women over 40, but women of all ages who will eventually reach this age and women over 40 who can always reflect and enjoy a good laugh or two.

When I first walked in I was greeted by Nina, one of Benefit Cosmetics makeup artist who allowed me to nibble on fresh sweet strawberries and sip champagne while she touched up my makeup after my long work day. We enjoyed beauty chat and I learned a few tips from her. One tip was versus having a client "look up" while applying mascara, try telling them, "look down." This way if the client isn't experienced with having objects close to their eyes you still can get the mascara on the lashes and reduce a "tear-up." I will try this tip on my next client. Part of being an artist whether seasoned or not is trying new techniques and never limiting possibilities!

"High Brow: A brow lifting pencil"

I lost count of the number of strawberries I had. They were so yummy.

Part of being a professional makeup artist is maintenance of your appearance so I'm at the nail shop getting a fill in of gel and shellac on my nails as well as a pedicure, but guess what I'm doing at the same time? BLOGGING!

I usually start and finish a blog at the same time, but for the posts I started on last night my eyes got pretty heavy around 2:00 A.M. this morning.

The nail techs here spoil me so well and one of my favorite techs took this photo of me blogging while enjoying my pedicure.

There is always time to get those ideas out. You just have to put that multi-tasking cap on and go, go GO!

After Doing Makeup For a Shoot

After doing makeup for a shoot I always make sure I gather all my makeup and personal belongings and leave the area clean, but what I truly love is taking quick snapshots with the models and providing them with my business cards and a hug.

To me it truly "wraps up" the shoot, plus I get very anxious for the final professional images so it's my little sneak peak to self while I "wait."

Casual and Cute: A Dash of Makeup

It's amazing how an outfit can change the appearance of one's makeup. This is the same makeup and model used in Lady In Green: Elegant Makeup; however, she is now wearing casual comfy clothes and her hair is down. Sometimes it's "safe" to wear the same type and style of makeup for different occasions. Usually it's more "extreme" for evening events, but you be the judge because you must feel comfortable in your own skin no matter how gorgeous the next person may view it or not.

2 Can Be Better Than 1: Use of Multiple Mascara

Sometimes it's hard to find that one mascara that just gives you the complete look you desire. I have quite a few mascaras I love from Mabyelline Great Lash to Dior, Rimmel, and more but I think I have truly found the perfect combination that gives me the natural lash appearance I desire.

In the image below I did not use any eyeliner so the focus could be on the lashes and mascara.

Left (My right eye- No Mascara) Right (My left eye- Mascara applied)

On my top lashes I first applied Rimmel Glam Eyes- Lash Flirt which provides volume and lift. Then I applied Christian Dior- DIORSHOW for a deeper dark and fuller look. On the bottom lashes I applied Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara. This new mascara is the best for bottom lashes I must say as it comes with a very small precise brush and can last up to 24 hours. It give much length to almost non-existent lashes.

Jack or Jane of All Trades? - Collective Benefit of Skills

In addition to being a makeup artist, I'm also a Budget Analyst and have always had a deep passion with the "numbers." I also enjoy cooking, crocheting, painting, and singing, oh did I mention I'm also in the Army.

"You do all that?"

Yes. This is a question I get a lot by those just getting to know me, but family and friends who know me well knows it's just who and how I am.

So many have made comments along the lines of, "What do you enjoy the most? Jack of all trades? How do you have time to do it all?" My reply, "To enjoy more than one platform of art or to have various interests does not automatically equate someone to the "Jack or Jane of All Trades." It does not mean that they are mediocre in all just because more than one exists; furthermore, it does not mean that because one has just one interest or simply focuses on one that they are proficient beyond measure in what they do. In reply to concerns about how time is spent, "People find and make the time for the people and things they truly enjoy and value."

My Love for Numbers:

Growing up I remember my Dad saying, "Use the calculator to check your work and not do your work." Now while there are equations as such that would take lengthy time to do versus the quick punch of buttons into a calculator, it was very beneficial to do so I see. I calculate with my mind first before writing down or using a calculator. This has equipped me to feel confident within self and not rely on any device to do what my mind can.

I would go grocery shopping with my Mother often and calculate items creating subtotals as she placed them in the cart. If I was close to the total I could get a "treat." This sense of applying what my Dad taught me coupled what my Mother rewarded me for felt good and was fun and I still do so today.

My Love for Art (Makeup, Crochet, Cooking):

I started painting very young and learned from my Dad. See story here. Growing up my brothers and sisters (8 children) were continually soaking up the talents an skills of our parents. My Dad painted and sketched amongst many other skills and my Mother was a seamstress designing many items from prom dresses to dance team outfits, crochet blankets and hats, and clothing. Anything I saw my parents do, besides the dishes, I wanted to do as well. I recently started back crocheting too.

Collective Benefit of Skills: How do they all tie in together?

My love for numbers developed into over 12 years Military experience as a Finance Manager within the Army, I currently work as a Budget Analyst, and recently graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with major in Financial Services.

My love for art has developed into over 6 years of professional makeup artistry experience in all skin-types, ages, and ethnicities, and my work displayed in magazines, book covers, fashion shows, photoshoots, film, and video and I currently work as a freelance makeup artist.

I connect the two by offering makeup tips and beauty advice to the women I know to include those in and out of the Military and use my knowledge of business and "numbers" to further build myself personally and professionally.

I was looking through the different fashion persons to follow on Twitter and came across Anna Wintour, British-born editor and chief of American Vogue and i fell in love with her tweets/quotes, but especially this one:

"Nobody is ugly. We're all special. There are just different levels of beauty. Therefore everybody is beautiful. Even you reading this." - Anna Wintour

Quotes are not only made to inspire, but can also serve to reconfirm one's own perspective and understanding. I apply this to self. I too believe that there are numerous variations and levels of this thing we call, "beauty."

Most often beauty is related to fame and wealth; however, I believe that not every beautiful person is a model or must have fame or even a desire for either of the two. Some just want to be. Exist. Live.

Beauty must not be defined at a higher level simply because it has more visibility as there is beauty from the shade of the red ant's back to the white and clear on the glacier of a mountain. Beauty from the freckles on one's cheek to the high cheekbones of another. Beauty from the short gray hair of a 50 year old woman to the long curly tresses of a young pre-teen.

Tampa Tweetup With Bobbie Rose

It's always great to finally meet up with artists and business professionals that I meet through Twitter. My first Tweetup was in Atlanta with some great makeup artists over a nice dinner. It was quite funny how although we were all in person, we were still tweeting right there and then about it!

On a recent business trip to Tampa, FL I had the pleasure of meeting up with another great contact I met via Twitter, Bobbie Rose "Skin Goddess"

In late 2009 I did a product review on one of her eyeshadow.

We walked around the mall just talking about many different topics to include makeup of course, shopped a little, and grabbed a bite to eat. I was surprised that she brought some of her lotions as gifts to myself and one of my sisters @thetrudz who also communicates with her via Twitter as well.

It's always great to network through various social mediums, but it's also a plus and feels like a reunion to meet up or shall we say Tweetup? I'm looking forward to the next one!

Free Trip To Hollywood: Touching Words From a Child

I received this note from an 8-year old little girl (daughter of a friend) who saw my makeup work and loved it. We chatted a bit about it and I told her how I became interested in makeup by painting since I was about her age.

I had to run off, but she said wait and wrote me a sweet note:

"I love you cuse you are beautiful and a wonderful makeup artist, is what I really like about you. Love ya, have a nice day!!"

What touched my heart even more was the bottom of the note which read, "Hollywood trip free free free."

I taped this note in my home office desk area as it's so touching. Motivation comes in many forms...

Beauty To Go: Michael Kors

During my most recent makeup trip to Sephora, I intended on just purchasing some Sephora Mattifying foundation and my favorite facial primer Too Faced Cosmetics Primed and Poreless primer but I ran across a new product which now is one of my "makeup must-haves."

My new love is Michael Kors Rollerball (parfum on one end and lip-gloss on the other)

Product description from Sephora website: "This double-sided, travel-size essential includes a 0.17 oz Eau de Parfum Rollerball and 0.15 oz Lip-Gloss. It's airplane-approved and slips easily into your pocket or purse for the perfect pout and scent wherever you go.

I have many lip-glosses and parfum; however, this has been my choice of the week. It's so much better than having a bottle of parfum in your purse, plus it's two-in-one and if you like to carry big bags like me, you won't have to look around your purse as much.

For just $22, this isn't bad at all. I'm going to look into more products as such.

My Daddy- My Inspiration

This past weekend I went home to Palm Beach, Florida to spend time with my family and oh what a great time it was. (Notice we both are protecting our eyes from the Sun-rays. Shades are about being fashionable as well as eye-protection).

This is a photo of my Father and I in the front yard of his home where I grew up. We were just sitting under cabbage palm trees having a nice Daddy and daughter talk. Oh yes, I always capitalize "Daddy" and "Mommy" out of the respect that's due to them.

My Father has been and is a great inspiration in my life . He has worked as a commercial fisherman all his life, is a wiz in mathematics, science, and physics, walks or rides a bike wherever he goes for the most part, and an awesome talented painter. With this is mind, it isn't odd that I too am a lover of the sciences in addition to the arts, I love numbers (I've worked in the finance and budget field for over 12 years), I've been very physically active during my life (track and field, power-lifting, varsity cheerleading, worked as a fitness model, 12 years of service in the U.S. Army, and a few dance and yoga classes here and there. Now let's touch on the painter-piece.

Growing up I've always seen my Father working on great masterpieces, meanwhile my Mother(may she R.I.P) was either at her sewing machine, singing gospel songs and playing the keyboard, being an inspiration in many lives, creating her magic in the kitchen, or running behind all 8 of the wonderful children she and my Father brought into this world. As my Father painted, I would grab any old sheet of paper and a pencil and follow after him and ask "why" utter an "ooh and ahh" here and there and smile when he said, "You did a good job" or pout when he said, "No. Do it like this." My sisters painted and sketched as well.

Because of the strong influence through his words, "You are a Hamilton. You can do anything you want, just get somebody to pay you for it" I developed an almost invincible energy, possibly coupled by the deep prayers from my Mother. There would be no one who could tell me, "You can't" because Daddy said, "You can!." I felt driven, DRIVEN to be, DRIVEN to create, DRIVEN to feel and know that as an artist and human being and as a Hamilton that I am limitless.

This daily motivation had me on mute during elementary school for the most part. Oh yeah I was always the first one to get my work done and received great grades, but I was so out of the box then and daydreaming was my moment(s) of creativity. This daydreaming was often doodled on scratch paper in class which later became a canvas in my 2nd grade Art Class where my teacher noticed my "too much talent for such a little girl." She provided the opportunity for this to be showcased. My work was entered into competitions and displayed at art galleries. Oh did it feel good to hear what Daddy said, do what Daddy said, feel proud like Daddy said I would, and be able to look in the mirror and feel good while thinking, "this stuff works!"

Later in life, my mid-20s I switched my canvas to the human face. This came about after modeling and getting to some shows where the makeup artist either did not show or was late, yet the show went on. I thought, "If I ever become a makeup artist, I would never conduct myself as such!" I started just bringing my own foundation, mascara, and gloss. Then someone liked how I did my eyeshadow and asked me to do their makeup, then I was asked to do makeup for a video shoot, then a book cover, then I bought more makeup and attended a makeup class, then I spent more time "playing with my makeup", then I started getting paid for it and receiving peer-critique, then there was a logo and branding and.......

(pauses in deep-thought)

We can only take advice from those we respect and my Father was respected. His words and advice float through my mind often. I am motivated by a challenge. Motivated by the opportunity to do my best and prove to self that I could end up with a final product that could produce much more.

Some have an influence-they make you think more than you usually would and can shift you left or right.

Some have an impact- their influence yields to a great mark or change in your life or a permanent insert on your perspective about life or any given situation.

Some INSPIRE...they do all of the above and this same energy follows you throughout your life. It is embedded into your DNA. It is like something you never heard before. Inspiration's best buddy is permanent motivation even if we allow it to be temporarily suppressed by "life's events."

I thank my Father (and Mother) for this inspiration that continually flows through my veins, heart, mind, and soul.

Don't wait until any given "holiday" to extend a great thanks to those who have inspired you.

Surprised by a Client

Last week I did makeup for a San Francisco bay area model that I met through Twitter. When she arrived for her appointment I was not only greeted with a hug, but a Starbuck's Gingerbread Latte. I was truly in awe and appreciative.

It's amazing how you can use Twitter and other social mediums to network and meet clients and great people. I often tweet how much I love Starbuck's Pumpkin Spice Latte and Gingerbread Latte. Now I have to have it with soy milk as I have adverse reactions to dairy products, but this latte had non-fat milk. Because she paid attention to even know what I liked and spent the time, energy, money, care, and concern to get it for me, I said a prayer and drank it anyways. Normally, any milk-product from Starbuck's would make me very nauseated and sick, but I find it a blessing that I felt just fine.

It's great to render a service and receive payment, but oh what a great warm feeling it is to know that a client cares and takes the time to show it.

Chocolate and Blue: Color Coordinating Makeup and Clothes

Last week I was enjoying time with family in DC for Thanksgiving. While waiting for my sister to get ready for our mini adventure, I made this video while relaxing in bed.

When you wear a certain color, your makeup doesn't have to "match" exactly. Take a look at a color wheel. You can coordinate makeup and clothes with a complementary color or wear a dash of the actual color in the makeup if you choose.

There is so much you can do with colors. Just dibble dabble until you have what you like!

The Creative Hour

When do you feel you're most creative?

My answer before used to be "all the time" but I've realized that when my mind is free from obligation and unnecessary attachment my creative "wheels" spin a little bit faster, well much faster.

Most people will say the brain is at its best first thing in the morning and there are many reasons for that, but my "Creative Hour" is what I call the wee hours of the night. Between 2-4 a.m. I am a wired bunny bouncing around with energy and ideas. I used to spend this time working on my blog or conjuring up great money-making ideas and projects. Lately, I've been bummed with life's obligations, but as a Libra, I'm working on that thing called "balance."

It's great to take the time to identify what time is your greatest as far as creating. That way you can work your schedule and agenda to maximize this time!

Testing Out New Makeup

I went to M•A•C yesterday with one of my sisters and I was testing out some different lip and eye pencils. I like to use the back of my hand and inner palm to get an idea of how different colors would look on different skin tones.

I also like to play with colors out of my own kit and see how different lip pencils mix with lip colors.

Because I was wearing all black my sis said I looked like one of the makeup artists, but that day they were wearing pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

When a Makeup Artist Gets Married: Who Does The Makeup?

So I was recently engaged, and one of the first comments I heard besides, "Congratulations" was, "So, are you going to do your own makeup?"

I don't know of any makeup artist that has done their own makeup for their wedding, that doesn't mean that there aren't some out there who have. Then again, I don't know too many who have gotten married lately, but here is my take on it. When a makeup artist gets married, she is a bride, and as a bride I would not want the obligation of doing anyone's makeup to include my own when I am in "bride-zone" and not "makeup artist-zone."

Many professionals get married, yet they separate the two. Can a photographer shoot their own wedding, should a videographer capture parts of their wedding and then jump in their tux or dress, should a chef make all the food and then go and change in a hurry? My answers to all of these questions is, "No."

The wedding party should enjoy this special day with as little stress and obligation as possible, with that said, there should be research of quality services for this day.

Will all that said, I am glad to announce that Celebrity Airbrush Makeup Artist, Body Painter, and Educator, SyntheOnline will be hired for my wedding 2012. She is my adopted big sister in the world of makeup, a great professional, and awesome person with a wonderful personality who achieves 100% customer satisfaction. So on October 7th of this year I hit the big 3-0! I didn't feel how I thought I would. There was no "different feeling."

I think one of the best gifts one can offer another is the gift of their natural talent...

My big sister Trudy of Tru Shots Photography said, "Hey let's do a photoshoot for your birthday." This was one of her treats to me.

I truly believe that a photoshoot is a great idea for a birthday gift as it captures a moment in time forever. You can look back and say, "Hey that was me at this age."

It was even a better experience because I was able to have my makeup work once again captured by her great photography, plus it was fun! Below are two of my favorite images from the shoot.

I must admit, the name of the product is one of the things that attracts me to a product. Marketing! Also I like a variation amongst lip colors.

For example: These four are quite close in color Bobbi Brown "Rose Sugar", Bobbi Brown "Buff", M•A•C Lipglass "Buzz", and M•A•C Lustreglass "Bateaux." While "close" in color they are quite different. Buzz has more of a cinnamon-feel to it with copper-ish sparkles in it. Bateaux has more o a golden orange hue. Rose Sugar has a dash of plum and Buff is more solid in color.

I have 5 sisters and 2 brothers. One of my sisters that I work closely with @thetrudz is a professional photographer who has traveled the world. We celebrated her birthday this past week and one of the gifts I gave her was my talent of makeup artistry. What was really cool is that she did her own photography for this session. I feel that one of the best gifts one can share with another is their God-given talent honed into a skill coupled with originality and creativity.

She isn't too fond of blue eyeshadow; however, I used blue in this look and she absolutely loved it. This goes to show that as a makeup artist you have to be able to know which products work best for which clients. It's a deep passion of mine to get them to love what they thought they hated.

This look to me is spicy and sweet. I added flirty lash enhancements for an extra flair and she added a gorgeous smile!

Prom Makeup: Natural, Soft, Innocent, and Youthful

Last week I did some prom makeup.

For this client I did a natural soft look. I used makeup to enhance her already naturally beautiful features without giving her too much of a "mature appearance."

I'm using one of my favorite makeup brushes to apply mascara. I prefer this versus a mascara wand as the brush catches each lash and reduces any possible clumping.

I'm a U.S. Soldier 24/7, but I work as a Financial Manager/ Budget Analyst during the day. On this day my client's mother really wanted her makeup done a little earlier on this day. The time was much earlier than I normally would schedule an appointment. So I'm seen here wearing my ACUs- Army Combat Uniform. I went straight from work to the brushes!

I'm applying MUFE-Makeup Forever HD-High Definition Microfinishing Powder. This is great for an overall final touch to the face.

A happy client makes the world go round!

As a makeup artist, I give the client what they want, but it is also good as a professional to suggest what may look great for a particular client. For prom looks on teen girls I prefer the natural, soft, innocent, youthful look -gentle on the blush, soft pink lips, and faux lashes.

Red Lips

It's safe to rock red lips all year round. Here are a few tips for rocking red lips:

•Wear minimal eye makeup when wearing red lipstick to prevent an overly-done face.
•Red lips can go with a smokey-eye look. I would use more of the light color (such as white) over the darker color (most often black)
•Make sure your lips are moisturized first. Then apply a lip-primer to help the color stay on longer and prevent possible "feathering" of the color
•Wear brighter shades of red in the Summer; darker in the winter (for example a deep burgundy is an awesome Winter-color, but quite heavy for Summer) A cherry-strawberry shade such as the lip-color used in this photo is great for the Summer.
•Try using a lip liner a little darker (1-2 shades at most) than the shade of red lipstick you use. Using a darker pencil, a red lipstick/gloss, and lighter color in the middle of the lips adds depth to the lip-color providing somewhat of a 3-D affect. (I was taught this technique by an Atlanta-based makeup artist and dear friend of mine
Butta'fly the Makeup Artist).
•Dab the inner lips after applying lip color to remove any excess of the product

Kissed By The Sun: Summer Skin Care

While enjoying the Summer months we must keep in mind the importance of wearing sunscreen all over the body and not just the face. This goes for the men too now!

Be sure to apply sunscreen before applying your makeup. Ensure you apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before Sun exposure.

When shopping for makeup look for products that include sunscreen. What I love is the Oil of Olay facial moisturizers. Many include sunscreen.

Makeup can last all day even when out in the Sun. Some tips to help with this is applying light makeup during the Summer months, using primer which serves as a barrier between the skin and makeup, using blotting paper to dab the face throughout the day to remove buildup of oil from the face, and retouching lightly with pressed powder.

Stay hydrated! Drink water even when you aren't thirsty because when you feel really thirsty that is when it is too late- you are ALREADY dehydrated by then.

Ladies and gentlemen ensure you are taking care of your skin first. Extended and over-exposure to the Sun can dry out and damage the skin, lead to skin diseases, and increase the chances of wrinkled skin at an earlier age.

Enjoy the beautiful Summer months, but protect your skin and share the importance of this with your friends and family.

Your True Beauty Is In Your Hands

As a makeup artist, I've found that some clients are unsure about the power they possess as the beholders of their beauty.

What do I mean by this?

For example, while doing makeup for a high school fashion show, a young teen looked in the mirror and said she loved her makeup, but her bumps still showed. I explained to her that I concealed her blemishes, but her bumps were elevated off the skin and this is something she has to manage, her skin that is. I also explained that at her age, acne is more likely and skin care is very important. She was in awe, but happy because she never really wore makeup before and her expectations were not realistic for her skin condition, but after explaining this to her she felt empowered to take care of her skin.

The clearer and healthier the canvas of the face is, the more flawless the makeup job can be.

Another example, a client with wrinkles stated she loved her makeup as well, but hated her wrinkles. I explained to her that I could conceal dark circles under the eyes and brighten her skin in that area, but wrinkles are due to aged skin and other reasons. There are options such as surgical processes, botox, etc.

Your true beauty is in your hands. The better a person takes care of their skin, has a balance healthy diet, and lifestyle, the better they will feel about themselves so when they sit in a makeup artist's chair while they can receive a make over, they can appreciate that makeup is not a "heal all" to any unwanted skin issues that can be treated and managed.

There is a time to see a makeup artist, a time to see a dermatologist, a time to see an esthetician, and most of all there is a time to meet with self in the mirror. (Part II of blog to be posted- Stay tuned)!

Happy April Fool's Day or Happy New Years to those who consider April 1st (springtime) as the new year. In honor of this day I am addressing a common misconception with makeup.

Wearing makeup is a beautiful thing. It enhances what natural assets and facial features you already have; however, it is a misconception that makeup makes you beautiful. Makeup can only make you more beautiful. This misconception can easily steer a person away from a skincare regime.

Whether you choose to wear makeup or not skincare is very important. The skin should be clean, healthy, and protected from the Sun. The lack of a skincare regime can lead to damaged skin, wrinkles, over-sized pores, blackheads, and more.

If you choose to wear makeup ensure your products include sunscreen whether it's your moisturizer or the products itself. Be just as passionate about your skincare as you are about which new lipstick to purchase and you will be so happy with yourself years down the line.

Don't be fooled when you look in the mirror after a full face of makeup has been applied. When you remove your makeup and wash your face you should be just as happy with the face you are staring at as you were with the one which had makeup applied.

Bashful Blue

To have a "balanced" face of makeup it's always safe to either dazzle up the eyes or the lips. To do both can overdue the face and actually detract from the beauty of each area.

In these images I dazzled up Yaahenawaa's eyes with shades of blue, purple, and rhinestone lashes. I used a natural shade of lip-color for her lips. The makeup brings the canvas to life simultaneously with her facial expressions giving life to the makeup.

A lipstick shade close to the skin complexion is a great choice. Nude lips are awesome for looks where the eyes are smokey or extravagant.

The color Green tends to symbolize Life. During this shoot with Tru Shots Photography I simply thought about my life at different moments and from different aspects, hence the various facial expressions. Green is one of my favorite eye shadows to wear. The right shade of green will look good against any skin complexion.

I used one of my favorite foudations: Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse which can be purchased for less than $10 at most drugstores. I used M•A•C Blush in "Raizin."

For the highlight on my brow I used M•A•C Eye Shadow in "Motif"

Green Eyeshadow is from Sally's Beauty Supply brand in "Glow Green"

A ruby-shade lip-pencil was used with a light-pink gloss in the middle to highlight lips.

Primers are great for creating a smooth surface prior to applying makeup. A primer serves as a barrier between the oils of your skin and your makeup. They are also great for making your colors pop and last much longer throughout the day.

I really had a ball doing this shoot because I was free to create whatever I wanted. I stepped in the mirror with no plan or pre-determined look to create.

Makeup runs in my blood. I've been a painter since age 7 and changed my canvas about 3 years ago to the face.

I love taking pictures as they capture who you are or how you feel at the moment and looking back at quality photos strikes great memories. Wearing makeup can be the voice for how you are feeling on any given day without even uttering a word.

My response:

1. The person who gave birth to me and the artist within me, my Mother (May she R.I.P) It is not an option now as she has entered into a higher realm of existence, but I wish I had the opportunity to do so.

2. Michelle Obama- A beautiful powerful woman with gorgeous strong features. I daydream about applying makeup to her face. She has a wonderful canvas to work with. I'd also love this opportunity as it is an honor to provide services to our First Lady, wife of our President, my Commander and Chief, the Honorable Barack Obama.

3. My 11 year old niece once she is "of age." I find that most people I've done makeup for it was either their first time wearing makeup or receiving professional makeup services so it was more than just makeup application, it was a new experience, a life experience for them.
My niece is so talented within the arts, I would love to be the first person to do her makeup once she is old enough.

This is the first question I received:

If you had to do a whole makeup look with only $5.00 (assuming you already had the brushes) what cosmetics would you buy?

I would go to a Micabella counter in the mall and negotiate prices with them as I have done before. I would receive one of the Shimmer Powders in a neutral color and create a complete look with just this one product.

How?
The Micabella pigments can be used as eye shadow (without water or with water for a more dramatic look) lip gloss (by adding the pigment to any clear lip product, nail polish (by mixing the pigment into the nail polish) , mascara (use the pigment with clear mascara) , bronzer (dab a little onto the face), and highlights.

Now for the person whose negotiation skills aren't that great or negotiation isn't an option, here are a few options:
1. Go online and search for products by price (low to high) at your neighborhood drugstore

This way you will save time from hunting around and gas for travel when you know exactly where to go and what to get.

2. Search eBay for makeup for sale. Lots of sellers offer free-shipping!

For a "whole makeup look" on a budget all you need is:
•Mascara
•Lip-gloss/Lipstick
•Brow pencil/Eyeliner (which you can use interchangeably)
•A tinted moisturizer would suffice for a light foundation (E.L.F. has them for just $1.00!)

Asian Eyes: Create A Crease in your Eyelids

The term "Asian" applies to a wide variety of cultures: Chinese, Korean, Indian, and Vietnamese...the list goes on and on." -Taylor Chang-Babaian (Celebrity makeup expert)

BEFORE: Jenny barely has a crease in her eyelids. While this is beautiful, she wanted to create a crease...so I did :)

AFTER: Dark eyeshadow is placed on the eyelid. A purplish shade is use where a natural crease would lay and the brow-bone is highlighted. Black and purple liner is added under the eye to give the eye a smoldering-look.

The eyes have 3 layers: (Jenny's eyes have 2 and not 3 layers so I created Layer 2-the Crease)

1. Eyelid - Black Eyeshadow

2. Crease- Purple Eyeshadow

3. Brow-bone- Iridescent shade for luminous highlight

For creaseless eyelids, place the focus on layer #2 (as seen in this photo)

Layer 1- Eyelid: The black eyeshadow is applied close to the lash-line and not to exceed where the crease would naturally fall.

Layer 2- Created Crease: Purple eyeshadow is used in a crescent shape on the eyes

Layer 3- An iridescent shade of eyeshadow is used to brighten up the eyes and accentuate the brows.

Yaahenawaa: A Touch of Pink

Pink is one of my favorite colors to use on the face. Yaahenawaa has naturally high-arched brows. I used just a tad bit of M•A•C in Fluidline in "Dipdown" with a thin precise eyebrow brush to sculpt her brows.

Flori Roberts foundation was used. I love their foundations as they blend well with medium to dark skin-tones.

She is wearing a mixture of eyeshadows with M•A•C Motif as the highlight on her brow-bone. This is one of my favorite highlights as well.

Top and bottom lashes are worn for a dramatic eye-catching effect.

I applied a pinkish lip-color.

Yaahenawaa has gorgeous facial features.

With a burst of Starbucks in me and the creative energy flowing, I created this look. I used a fine precise (damp) eye-liner brush dabbed into various shades of blue Micabella Shimmer Powders

I added full dark black lashes to this look, over-exaggerated the brows, and created a brick-colored lip color.

I gentle dash of rust-colored blush is on the cheeks.

I call it Colorbust as the earrings and eyes are full of COLOR!!!! It represents the free expression of oneself. Earrings are designed by a jewelry designer from New Orleans. I fell in love with them.

I also am wearing black and gold lashes for an extra pizzaz.

Concealer was used to hide the hairs at the end of my brow to change the shape of my brow.

I started painting as a child. I would daydream in school because I "knew what I wanted to be when I grew up." I would start painting or drawing something and by the time class was over I had a piece of art! (I still got excellent grades)

Well the 7-year old in me got the best of me this Halloween!

Behold, "Entangled Beauty"....

Micabella Shimmer Powders were used for this look. I dipped my brush in a little water to slightly dampen the brush and then patted it into the shimmer powder. The black lines were created with Makeup Forever Flash Color in black.

Capture Every Lash: Mascara with no mess

Often clients and friends tell me they have never applied mascara to their bottom lashes. One never thought about it as she believed her bottom lashes were too thin and another said it gets too messy and always gets on her skin.

There is a fix!!!

Use a brush similar to the one shown in this picture. Personally, I am in love with MAC mascara fan brush #205. It is my favorite out of all of my brushes. Slide it up and down the wand of the mascara brush out of the tube and apply to the lashes. This type of brush is excellent for capturing each and every lash despite how thin and short.

You have better control of the amount of mascara that is used on the lashes rather than the mascara brush out of the tube which captures a greater amount of mascara and can make "boo-boo's" especially under the eyes.

Clean brush after each use for sanitation purposes, to prevent a clumped-up build up of mascara, and to preserve the life of the brush.

I fell in love with Kevyn Aucoin's Precision Eye Definer. It's a rich, creamy, highly-pigmented creme liner that comes with a precise mini-brush for application and goes on very smooth.

I woke up this morning and started to "play" in the mirror.

You can either apply the liner and create very thin lines or make them thicker (as shown close to the lash-line) This is one of my "must have" make-up products. I prefer it over liquid eye-liner and it is much easier to apply the liquid eye-liner.

I truly enjoy working with Coulei the Beauty, an Atlanta-based model, hair stylist (work reflected in photos as well), and awesome dear friend of mine. She has a nice oval face which reduces the need for extra contouring. Below are a few looks from shoots I've done her make-up on. I used a rich bronzer and warm rust-shades of blush to give her this "brazen" look. Her captivating eyes empowered her look by far!

Sparkly Metallic Eyes

I truly enjoyed creating this look. This was for an Oakland-based singer. Her eyes sparkled all night! She wanted her eyes to "pop" and boy did they "pop" alright. I used L'Oreal HIP High-Intensity Pigments. This is a metallic eye shadow duo. It's so cool you get two complementing colors in one!

These colors are so intense and rich that an eye-primer is not actually needed; however, because she was performing, singing, and more than likely sweating that night, IDEITY had to play it safe!

Products used to achieve this look:

•L'Oreal HIP High Intensity Pigments "Electrified 510"

•I also blended in a little bit of black eye shadow on the outer eye

•MAC Graphblack Technakohl Eye-Liner (feel free to use liquid eye-liner)

Although I love extreme Make-Up looks, I am also a fan of the natural-look.

What I did to spice up my natural-look:

Top two things:

1. Soft natural flaring faux lashes without mascara

2. 2 contrasting eye colors (nude and soft navy)

I also did the following to keep my natural "un-boring"

>>>Brown Brows (your brows will stand out more when they are about 3 shades lighter than your hair for dark-colored hair and about 2 shades darker for light-colored hair)

>>>A kiss of blush (I used a warm-colored MAC Raisin blush) Just a tad bit (think of a peck)

Last, but not least SMILE! A smile brightens up the face by far...

For extra full, juicy, plump lips apply your lip-liner right on your lip-line. Over-exaggerate the natural contour of your lips.

For lips that naturally aren't full try a Lip Plumper Apply a thin coat to the lips prior to applying your lip color. Add more if you want a glossier look (most lip plumpers are in the form of a gloss) Use a lip brush to smooth and blend colors so they flow together.

Okay, so you guys see that 7 year old painter in me huh? This look can be achieved by the simple application of a creme-rich lipstick and carefully placing each sequin on the lips with a tweezer so that the hands don't stick to the lips or an already applied sequin. You want to ensure that sequins are placed closely to the lip line, but do not surpass the outer edge or it can give the lips a sloppy look :-(

1st shot: is without gloss. Satin look. I tend to be a high-gloss lover, but I love this shot over the gloss ones. Which out of the 3 is your favorite?

3 Reasons Not to Sleep with Make-Up on

Okay, more than likely we all have been guilty of this at one time: You go out for a nice evening and get in a tad bit too late and you are exhausted! All you are thinking about is kicking off those stilettos and letting your face meet your pillow.

What do you do?

A. Just hit the sack while thinking, “Okay, I’ll wash my face in the morning. I’m only going to sleep for a few hours.”

B. Say to self, “Okay, I’m going to take a 30 minute nap then get up and wash my face.”

C. Say to self, “I know better and care about my skin. I should take IDEITY’s advice below to help keep my beautiful skin looking healthy, vibrant, and young!”

If you chose “C” YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!

I beg you NOT to even close your eyes and rest your head for 5 minutes without cleansing your face. As a matter of fact, I plead with you not to. Why? Well here 3 of the many reasons why you should NEVER go to sleep with any make-up on your face:

1. Clogs your pores!

Your skin will experience difficulty in breathing and problem in perspiring which will lead to excess oil-build up and Number 2 and 3 below.

2. Skin ages at a faster rate!

The excess of oil build-up leads to the formation of fine lines and deepens pre-existing fine lines. This can age your skin by 7 years! When the pores are packed with make-up they can enlarge over time. Collagen in the skin begins to be reduced with age. When the collagen goes, you are left with large pores that don't tighten back up as easy or at all.

3. Bacteria Alert!

Keep in mind that you not only have make-up on your face at the day’s end, but sweat and all of the impurities that your skin has been exposed to, such as cigarette smoke.

Carry make-up remover cloths with you. "Pocket Sense" – Baby Wipes. While they do not completely cleanse the skin the way it is needed, it is better to remove most make-up rather than none at all. This is simply an on-the-go "fix" until you can make it to the sink.

Positive Affirmation: I appreciate and love my skin. I will exercise this by properly cleansing my skin. Sleeping with make-up on is a No-No. I won't make a habit out of this. I love my skin. I love my skin. I love my skin!

When you have pimples, avoid using shimmery blush as they accent the pimples more and make them stand out. Number one thing would be proper skin care to treat the skin and if you choose to use blush go with a matte "drier" look.
If you have lines around your lips, use matte lipstick to prevent the lipstick from bleeding.
Using very hot or very cold water can break veins in you face. Rotate between the use of hot and cool water to aid in facial blood circulation.
Always hire a professional makeup artist for your special occasions as you want to look your best.
Step above YouTube and set up a one-on-one class with a professional makeup artist to learn how to properly apply makeup specifically for your face.
When applying faux lashes, bend them in a crescent shape and make sure the glue is very tacky prior to applying.
Low on money? Use baby oil and cotton balls to remove makeup as a temporary solution.
Wash face with warm to hot water to open pores and be sure to wash with cold water to close pores back up.
Disposable cosmetic sponges are just that- disposable. Use once on each side at the most and discard. Bacteria is easily built up in this type of product and can spread on your skin.
Be makeup-free when working out. Your pores are more open when working out and as you sweat and release oils from your skin this can mix with your makeup and create problems for your skin. Allow your skin to breathe freely and prevent unnecessary and avoidable skin problems.

Pat under the eyes rather than swiping or rubbing when applying any make-up product as the skin under the eye is very sensitive. Swiping or rubbing will lead to wrinkles.
To touch up your makeup during the day, use a pressed powder rather than more foundation as the pressed powder is much lighter.
Use a brow-grooming gel to control brows and have them laying in place
When steaming the face with hot/warm water, be sure to close your pores back with cold water.
It's more cost-effective to cut Q-tips in half and use them to apply lip-gloss versus purchasing lip-brushes. Carry them around in your purse so when you and the ladies go out and may want to use the same lip-gloss you can practice safe hygiene.
Try clear mascara to give the lashes a nice groomed natural-look!
Use a lip-primer prior to applying lipstick for smoother, softer lips with long-lasting color.
